On November 2, 2026, the Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia marks its 100th anniversary. This milestone is a testament to the service and value that notaries continue to provide to British Columbians. Join us in learning more about the moments that contributed to the Society along the way, read first-hand accounts from other notaries and watch a video we created to celebrate this momentous occasion.
A Century of Service and Evolution
When the Society was established in 1926, it helped create a foundation for the notary profession in British Columbia. By 1927, more than 600 notaries were practising in 118 communities across the province.
Over the century that followed, the profession continued to evolve through changes in regulation, public protection, education, technology, and the range of services available to British Columbians.
What has remained consistent is the role of B.C. notaries in helping people navigate important legal and personal decisions.
The People Behind the Profession
Behind every legislative change, new technology, and professional milestone are the people who have carried the profession forward. Generations of notaries have built practices, served clients, mentored colleagues, and become part of the communities where they live and work.
Across a century of change, the most important part of the profession has remained personal: helping people understand their choices, navigate significant decisions, and move forward with confidence.
As part of the centennial, the Society is sharing stories and memories from B.C. notaries about the people, experiences and communities that have shaped their careers.
““My choice to move to a smaller rural community has allowed me to have a great career in a beautiful area of the Province, where my horses mow my lawn and I can ride them to work if I choose.”
— Patti Thomson, Lake Cowichan
“Looking back, what initially seemed like a professional setback turned into a fulfilling and rewarding career.”
— Lilian Cazacu, Langley & Aldergrove
“Where I currently practise on Quadra Island, I have been taken by boat to Read Island to help clients and give a talk.”
— Sally Houghton, Quadra Island

The Society’s anniversary video looks back at a century of change through archival photographs, documents, and moments from the history of B.C. notaries.
Looking to the Next Century
The 100th anniversary comes at another moment of change for the Society and the broader legal and regulatory environment in British Columbia.
But change is not new to this profession. For a century, B.C. notaries have adapted as laws, technology, and the needs of the public have evolved. That history provides a strong foundation for what comes next.
As the Society embarks on its next chapter, its focus remains on supporting professional excellence, serving the public interest and recognizing the important role notaries continue to play in the lives of British Columbians.
100 Years. Thousands of Important Moments.
The Society’s centennial is ultimately a recognition of the generations of notaries who have served British Columbians and the communities that have placed their trust in them.
Thank you for the important work you have done to help shape the Society’s first century. We hope you will continue to contribute and be part of the next chapter.
